INTRODUCTION TO "WINTALKS"

Up till now it has been very difficult to communicate with your Personal Computer. But now there is "WINTALKS" !!!!

WinTalks allows your computer to speak to you, but also you can speak to your computer! We have created an artificial intelligence machine that can do almost anything you want!

Remember the intelligent computer called "Hal" in the famous movie "2001, A Space Odyssee"? Well, our "Hal", who is locked up in WinTalks, very much resembles the movie character with the same name.

Type any text in any application and WinTalks will read it aloud. Use any type of Speech recognition software to speak to computer and thus start a dialog with "Hal" who is your new computer friend.  "Hal" knows a great deal, and you can ask him any question you like to which he will certainly respond. You can extend Hal's knowledge yourself by adding subjects into his memory!

WinTalks offers many more features and is constantly being improved. Registered users are entitled to download upgrades free of charge!

COPY PROTECTION

General

Regrettably in today's world it has become a global sport to crack software or to find other ways to use software without paying for it. What people tend to forget is that software makers will no longer be encouraged to enhance existing products or write new software. It is for this reason that we have decided to defend our interests by means of a copy protection. WinTalks is not expensive. Please do not attempt to crack it. If you like WinTalks, please pay for it.

Warning

We will hunt down any villain who cracks the security protection and or who in any other way harms the interest of the majority users who act in an honest fashion.

The procedure

1. Note down the ACCESS CODE that appears after starting WinTalks;

2. Register your copy of WinTalks: Email this access code to sales@dsh2000.com and arrange for payment. At the moment we will only accept a 20 US$ bill or 20 Euro's sent in an envelope to: DSH electronics, P.O.Box 1131, Leidschendam, The Netherlands. Include your name and address (or email address) with this payment. Credit-card payment is in preparation.

3. You have 30 days to send the Access Code and Payment to use; plenty of time to continue using WinTalks in anticipation of your KEY

4. Enter the KEY and the Register screen will never appear again on that PC.

Moving from The software to a other PC

The software can only be installed and used on 1 personal computer. If you want to move WinTalks to another PC then you should follow this procedure:

  1. Start WINTALKS;
  2. Click on "HELP/REGISTER" and select "Move WinTalks to other PC"
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen!
  4. WinTalks will now be uninstalled from your current PC and a MOVE code will appear.
  5. Note this MOVE code on a piece of paper. (If you forget to do so: You will find the code also in the file "UNWINSP.TXT" located in the WinTalks directory).
  6. Install the WinTalks software on the other PC and report the MOVE code together with the new ACCESS code to DSH electronics by Email. We will then send you a new key.

You must follow this procedure otherwise we cannot send you a free new key. There is a limit: you can only get a new key twice per year. If you wish to move the software more that twice per year (which is highly irregular), then we will charge 10 US$ (or 10 Euro) for a replacement key.

HOW WINTALKS WORKS

The prime task of WinTalks is to read any text aloud that you type on your PC or have stored in files. It uses Microsoft "Text-to-Speech software technology. Voices in many languages can be found on the Internet.

A unique feature is WinTalkss' ability to read any text aloud, independent of the application in which you type this text. The "Keyboard intercept" (if ON)  monitors every button you press on your keyboard and passes this character BOTH to the application in which you are working AND to WinTalks! This is cleaver technology that so far no other competing product offers.

The second important feature of WinTalks is the Clipboard monitor feature. Any text that you select with your mouse in ANY application and copy to the Windows Clipboard (with "Paste" or CTRL+INSERT keys) will be read aloud. WinTalks continuously keeps an eye on the Clipboard and if its contents changes then the text will be read.

The third unique feature is the interactive communication that you can established with your computer. Turn your PC into an artificial intelligence machine! WinTalks offers enormous flexibility: to very large extent you can determine yourself what kind of dialog you wish to have. Besides small talk, basic interactive dialog, arithmetic and day to day matters, WinTalks is built round a large Q & A database that is already filled with information, but which you can modify and extend yourself almost without limitation and without impairing the speed of the interactive dialog.

OPERATION

Starting WinTalks

The easiest way to start WinTalks is via "START/Program's" or by double clicking  the WinTalks icon on your desktop.

WinTalks has an Audio-Help feature. Select it from the Menubar, and WinTalks will guide you through all the features.

APPLICATIONS

Under the Menu bar heading "Applications" you will find the following:

Below we will discuss these features in detail:

MS-Word

This will start the well-known Microsoft word processor. WinTalks will remain visible on the screen as a narrow letterbox size window. MS Word will appear below the WinTalks letterbox.

Encarta

This will start the ENCARTA encyclopedia by Microsoft. WinTalks will remain visible on the screen as a very small window with 3 buttons. Select a subject in ENCARTA and press the left button (marked ">") and WinTalks will read the subject aloud. You can also change the settings while in this mode.

Press the "STOP" button to close Encarta and return to WinTalks in full-screen" mode.

Notepad

This starts Microsoft's simple Wordprocessor called, "NOTEPAD" (it was called WRITE.exe in older Windows versions). Notepad is handy to create and alter text files.

Read EMAIL

This will start Microsoft OUTLOOK EXPRESS to let WinTalks read your Emails out aloud! This can also be done with the function keys (F5, F6 and F7). Outlook should be set such that it automatically jumps to your INBOX after starting up. In case of problems: please start Outlook Express separately.

Send EMAIL

This also will start Microsoft OUTLOOK EXPRESS. Any typed text in WinTalks can now be sent as an Email. WinTalks will tell you what to do..

COMMAND'S for "Hal"

If you use a speech recognition program or use the keyboard then you can interactively communicate with Hal! You can also give him commands:

General

Do not use rude or obscene words, because Hal will most certainly tell you off!

Starting of applications

You can also instruct Hal to start applications:

These commands will only work of these applications have been installed on your PC in a standard fashion (so in the standard directory without filename changes or other). These applications should of course also have already worked correctly in stand-alone mode (so not started via WinTalks).

If you use Speech recognition software, do make sure that this software knows the words and jargon you are using. If necessary train the speech recognition program and/or add your words (list) to the "context".

Special features (see detailed description below)

Note: When you use Speech recognition software, always first put the cursor on the text line with the black/grey background in order to give it the "focus" by clicking left with the mouse.

Also make sure that you have selected the correct Speech recognition software: see SETTINGS. If you communicate with Hal by means of the Keyboard, then set this setting to "NO SPEECH RECOGNITION" and give a hard return (ENTER) after you have typed in the commands and other texts that you use to have a dialog with Hal.

RESPONSE by "Hal"

Hal is almost human! If you say special things to him, he certainly will respond. Select "Reactions by Hal" from the "Hal" item in the Menu bar to program the response yourself! Simply change the contents of the table that then appears or add lines at the bottom of this table. To save your entries, simply scroll briefly up or down.

Remark

Although we do NOT recommend it, another way to change the Response is to edit the  "SPEECH1.TXT" file that can be found in the WinTalks directory. You can use NOTEPAD to edit this text file. However, do take care not to destroy the format of this textfile! Every line is 80 characters long (fixed length!) and always ends in a "Cursor Return, Line Feed). The Left part is 30 characters wide and the right side is 48 characters wide (this is how Hal will respond). Never use Tab's to fill up empty text parts, but always use spaces!

SPEAKING CALCULATOR

WinTalks incorporates a speaking calculator! Let Hal make complex calculations and tell you the result!

The speaking calculator can do the four basic calculations between two numbers, namely add, subtract, divide and multiply. It can also do algebraic calculations.

The table below gives an overview of the commands you should give to Hal to make him do the desired calculations. There are various ways of giving these commands.

Calculation:

Command (say this:)

Add

"Calculate [number-A] plus [number B]"

"Calculate [number-A] plus [number-B]"

"How much is [number-A] plus [number-B]"

"[number-A] + [number-B]"

Subtract

"Calculate[number-A] minus [number-B]"

"Calculate [number-A] minus [number-B]"

"How much is [number-A] minus [number-B]"

"[number-A] - [number-B]"

Multiply

"Calculate [number-A] times [number-B]"

"Calculate [number-A] times [number-B]"

"How much is [number-A] times [number-B]"

"[number-A] * [number-B]"

Divide

"Calculate[number-A] divided [number B]"

"Calculate [number-A] divided [number-B]"

"How much is [number-A] divided [number-B]"

"[number-A] / [number-B]"

When using 'add' you may replace the word "plus" by "and". Equally, when subtracting you may replace "minus" by "less" ; and 'multiply' by "times" and when dividing you may replace the word "divide" by "quotient" but not by "divide by"

Example: say this: "Calculate10 plus 12". Hal answers with "The sum of 10 and 12 is 22".

From version 3.0 onwards you can also directly enter a calculation like: "10+12".

Also algebraic calculations can be performed on single numbers:

Example: say this: "Calculate root 144". Hal responds with: "The square root of 144 is 12"

YOUR OWN ENCYCLOPEDIA ("KNOWALL")

A very unique and powerful feature of WinTalks is the addition of an electronic speaking encyclopedia. Simply ask Hal anything you want to know and Hal will try to find the answer in his own memory. He uses an elaborate database called "Knowall1.mdb" to look up the answer.

You can modify and extend the Knowall database yourself using Microsoft ACCESS or any other database program that can handle the standard Microsoft "mdb" type of databases!

Example of usage:

For example you could say: "What is The capitol of Holland " and Hal will respond with "The capitol of Holland is Amsterdam". Basically this feature is straightforward: Hal compares your question with all the Questions that are stored in the "Knowall1.mdb" database and responds by giving the stored answer. The Code in the database determines in what order words, that can be found in the original Question, should be re-assembled to construct a linguistically correct answer. The numbers in the code simply are the word positions and "A" tells the software where to insert the Answer.

With less than 2000 entries, the database is most certainly not complete. However, it gives some idea of what can be done with it. Please modify and/or extend it yourself.

DSH electronics would very much appreciate to receive copies of your amended Knowall1.mdb database (preferably in ZIP form) by Email in order to incorporate your changes in future versions of Knowall for the benefit of all WinTalks users. We will screen all your entries to the best of our ability to remove copyrighted material or obscene language. However, we will not accept liability for any copyright infringement. Hopefully an exchange mechanism will be generated on the internet (in a Newsgroup or other) such that this database (or other databases) are created without the involvement of DSH electronics. Whatever you do, always keep Copyright issues in mind and avoid obscene language.

SETTINGS

WinTalks offers a large array of possibilities. You might find the number of features overwhelming. Please just skip what does not interest you. We have tried to make WinTalks as universal and flexible as possible.

Monitor and Speak the Clipboard

WinTalks can read the contents of the Windows clipboard out aloud! You can use the COPY and PASTE features in MS-Word or other, or use the keyboard   with CTRL+C or CTRL+INS) to copy text to the Clipboard. WinTalks monitors the contents of the clipboard and as soon as the contents changes then it will be read aloud.

Keyboard Intercept

This is a very important feature. It enables WinTalks to read any text that you type in ANY Windows application aloud The feature makes use of a special DLL thanks to Konstantin Tretyakov.

You can set this feature permanently ON or OFF under settings.

Here, under the Menu bar, you can switch it on or off just for this moment.

Please note that a soon as you type text into the WinTalks text field or the interactive dialog field for "Hal" then the Keyboard intercept will be temporarily disabled.

Regrettably, the keyboard hook can sometimes fail. This can be resolved by pressing the button with the Keyboard symbol a couple of times. If this fails, you might have to restart your computer.

Never start two instances of WinTalks, because this does cause the keyboard intercept to fail. If you are not able to activate this feature at all, this indicated that another application is already intercepting your key strokes. We don't want to be alarmist, but one possible cause could be a virus in the form of a Trojan Horse that is monitoring and reporting everything you type... However, normally the cause probably is something less sinister.

General Settings

To start the General Settings: Select SETTINGS ->General Settings from the Menu-bar or press the Settings button with the mouse. A screen with tab's will then appear:

Below each TAB is discussed in detail::

TAB: General

TAB: Speaking manner

This determines how WinTalks speaks words and sentences.

Some features can not be used in combination. WinTalks automatically corrects such settings.

Messages

Special

Numbers

This is also a very special feature of WINTALKS: you can determine yourself how WinTalks will read numerical text (numbers). We recommend that you set these setting to the "intelligent" mode.

TAB: Speech mode

There are two versions of WinTalks. For Dutch users there is a (2) CD-ROM version (called "WINspraak") that contains more than 1.6 GByte of spoken words read by a real person! During the development of WINspraak we have successively improved the real voice. Up to now 5 modes have been developed. Modes 1 to 4 have been disabled and mode-5 remains.

However, WinTalks only uses synthesized computer voices (by Microsoft, Lernhout & Hauspie etc.). you MUST select mode-6 to use WinTalks!!!

TAB: Voice-settings

When using WinTalks together with the two Dutch CD-Roms that contain speech spoken by real person, then this tab will show various settings for the voice.

However, in mode-6, which is the normal mode for WinTalks then all voice controls are located on the WinTalks main screen and this tab has no use.

TAB: Characters

WinTalks can speak all characters (dots, comma's etc.). You can set the way WinTalks does this yourself:

TAB: Clock & Timer

WinTalks also offers a speaking clock!

WinTalks can automatically tell you the time at regular intervals. The interval can be set between 0 and 60 seconds. If you wish to hear speaking clock then switch it to ON.

You can also set how the time is read:

WinTalks also offers a speaking calendar. Certain texts can be read out aloud at set moments. To use this feature, set the "speak timer texts" to on.

You can edit the texts and times yourself!

 Back to Index

DATABASE

The data base contains all the information that 'Hal' needs to reply to your questions. The name of the default database is KnowAll1.mdb. This is a standard Microsoft "Access" type of database. Use "Access" to modify the database and/or add lines to it.

We would appreciate to receive a copy of your amended or extended database by email so we can include your topics in the generic database for the benefit of all other users.

Do not add offensive entries or illegal or copyrighted data. We will do our best to screen your submissions and alter/delete database entries if necessary.

PROBLEM SOLVING

V. Why does a green registration screen appear after startup?

A. You probably still have not registered or paid for your copy of WinTalks. It could also be that you did not type in the key code correctly. Please take care not to mix up characters like "1" and "i" and also "0" and "O".

V. Why can't WinTalks find certain files?

A. Probably  WinTalks was not installed correctly. Please try again..

V. Why do I get an error when closing WINTALKS?

A. This can happen when WinTalks cannot close an opened application correctly.
